The Texas Aquaponics League Sent Us the Instructions

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

By getting off of my butt and making my organic garden more than just a dream, I have taken a huge step forward in my life to become a self reliant person. I have always heard that having your own food supply is heavenly, and how other gardeners like myself enjoy the freedom of picking their food every day. I wanted to experience this feeling, and that is why I followed the recommendations that were set forth by the texas aquaponics league last month. They sent everyone who is a member the exact blueprint to set up a fully functioning aquaponics system, and the list of supplies and tools you need to finish this project. I was amazed at how much time I saved having the blueprint in front of me, and it made me wonder why I hadn’t tried something like this a few years or decades earlier than I did.

First Time Edger

Monday, December 5th, 2011

My neighbor came over and used his yard blower to clean up some grass I’d left around the sidewalk using my string trimmer, to help retain the look. I had a number of areas where the grass had overgrown my above ground pool landscaping. Before buying this edger, I didn’t edge around my cheap inground pool for five years. Too bad for them I do not lend tools to even family members. Actually, I was tempted to keep going and doing my neighbors lot! The electric start is way more reliable than a gasoline engine. Adjustments allow you to set the depth. Plus its much better for the ozone layer. This is the third edger I have owned, and it’s the best. I purchased an extra blade expecting to tear up at least 1 blade trying to get the hang of it. I have only used the Edge Hog two times since getting it this week but its been fantastic using it on my above ground pool landscaping.

Termite Promblem in Grandmothers Garden

Monday, November 21st, 2011

My grandparents live in an ancient wooden house. Three generations have lived in the house and hopefully I will own it one day. It is in fantastic shape and the only problem they really have has to do with the property. For years my grandmother has had a garden in their huge backyard. That garden has fed the family on numerous occasions and I have worked in it for too many hours to count. Unfortunately there has been a constant pest problem in the form of termites. One would think that the termites would be attacking the majestic wooden house but no – they prefer to terrorize my grandmothers garden. After several attempts to rid herself of them with store brought products my mother called a man in for a termite inspection. Hopefully the professionals will be able to handle the problem and my grandmothers garden will return to its former glory.

What is a Turf Cutter and How to Use It?

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Finally, it is springtime again. You are planning to recreate and transform your lawn. Your old lawn is looking tired and all whacked up anyway. You want to change it, put some flair in it, or maybe put some garden space. So what are you gonna do? Getting down on your knees and digging it all up is definitely not an option. Your lawn is just too big! Fortunately, there is a tool that can do all the hard part for you. This tool is called a turf cutter.

A turf cutter, sometimes also called a sod cutter, is an amazing device that strips off a lawn’s surface. It is exceptionally valuable if you want to create a nice little lane or a neat pathway right across a gorgeously maintained field. It is also very handy when you wish to plant something underneath your lawn. A turf cutter allows you to cut off a neat strip from your lawn, so you can dig up a trench and bury your pipes or anything for that matter. Even better is, you can roll out the cut-off turf back to its original space, and nobody would know the difference! Isn’t that brilliant?

A turf cutter kind of look like a sod cutter rental. It usually resembles a shovel with a bevelled back. One type has jagged edges while another type has a blade. To use this tool, step your foot on the cutter and shove it into the ground. Do not stop until you hear the tearing sounds of the roots. The slanting back of the cutter will prevent it from

burrowing too deeply. When the roots start to come off, cut the turf or sod by squares, and slide a shovel underneath to pick up the sods. Handle the sods carefully if you want to reuse them. For stripping off large areas of land, a gas-powered turf cutter can be used. It is a power machine standing on four wheels which can cut long rectangles of sods. However, a person needs a firm hand when guiding this machine, which shakes unsteadily while it works. A turf cutter is undeniably a powerful tool that saves us from a nerve-wracking job!

The truth is that algae is usually more of an eye soar than anything else. Keeping your garden algae free is simple.

To prevent an algae outbreak in your garden, you need to prevent it from having its basic necessities. The most common solution for any algae problem is to remove the light source that is feeding it. One option is to cover the tops of the containers with some sort of medium or covering. This will prevent any light from penetrating onto the soil surface. Why Choose Hydroponic Nutrients

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Most organic nutrients are not able to be used in the most popular hydroponic systems. Hydroponic nutrients have been specifically designed to work in recirculating systems. And since these nutrients are usually filtered, they are aeroponic friendly as well.

These hydroponic nutrients were designed to give your plants explosive growth and yield. The synthetic nutrients are able to be stored for longer periods of time and are also able to remain in a solution for weeks without decomposing.

When using a system, such as an aeroponic system, care must be taken in choosing the right nutrient. The small orifices in these systems are able to pass thick and unfiltered organic material. Most hydroponic nutrients have been filtered as to pass through these small surfaces without any impedance.

Always make sure that you do not over feed your plants with using these types of plant food. It is easy to burn your plants due to a high level of nutrition.

Terracotta Filled Water Vessels Attract A Lot Of Birds

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Recently I shifted to my new bungalow and had to prepare the ground to create a new garden. First the whole area was dug up and pebbles and stones were removed. As the area had more sandy soil I had to mix it with clay soil. Sandy soils are mostly useless as they don’t hold water for the plant. I also wanted some firm ground to build a wooden gazebo too.

Along with it compost and organic material was added to hold nutrients and water within the soil. The pH value of the soil is another important factor in determining the growth of the flowering plants. I was told by a gardener who was an expert to use annuals for planting rather than perennials during the first year so that one doesn’t have to disturb the permanent plants. It took me some time to have a full fledged garden. I placed flat terracotta vessels with water inside it on stands in the garden. Early in the morning the birds would visit and take a dip in the vessel or would sometimes drink water from it. Now I love to spend time in my garden.

Are you one of those people who shudder with fear at the thought of growing fruit? It’s understandable when you see the work that goes into the large commercial orchards that are around. But adding a few fruit trees to your garden could be a valuable asset to your family’s health, and with a few basic tips, you can be very successful at growing your favorite fruit. The biggest factor is going to be the soil composition and acidity and where you plant the fruit trees, although often you can make up for soil variables by preparing the soil properly before planting. Sunshine, rain and exposure to the wind are going to be important too. And if you are short on space, there are many dwarf varieties of fruit trees now available, or choose a fruit tree that you can train to grow against a fence or wall to save on space. You can buy them already shaped for this purpose from your garden center or train their growth yourself through specific pruning.

It gives them a chance to be outdoors and clear their heads, and take an interest in their living environment. The sense of teamwork that comes from planting a Los Gatos Landscape Design together and taking care of it regularly is priceless. It will give your child a real sense of accomplishment, as well as a feeling of contributing to the home. It is one of the best investments you could make in your family life.
