How Do I Put These On?

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

While I was at the office today, the manager called us all in to give us our new name badges and name tags that he ordered for us last week. When we got them, we all had no idea that all of these were going to be magnetic name tags. None of us have ever used something that had to be put on with a magnet before and a few of us were very confused, including myself. I decided to be the dumb one and ask how we were supposed to apply these new name tags to our uniform and the boss looked at me like I was clueless in life. He explained to me that I was supposed to slide the back of the magnetic clasp off of the metal bar and place the name tag on the outside of my shirt, and put the magnet inside of my shirt. That was actually very easy.

Beading is Fun

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Beading could be one of the most popular crafts of all time. It can be done at almost any age above toddler and can be complex or simple. There are so many techniques and a vast array of projects available. Beads are easy to be creative with. You can use them with just about any other crafting project. Girls and boys both enjoy bead work. My 8 year old nephew does it often before bedtime, enjoying the challenge of putting patterns together. It’s relaxing for him and he’s learning what works and what doesn’t in design. It would be logical that beading machines would simplify a project but also make it stronger and hardier than a hand made piece. After all, sewing, and knitting machines do the same. I think I might buy a beading machine for my nephew to see what he thinks of machine beading. Whether by hand or by machine, beading is fun.

Working Space

You need to be aware of the kind of working space that you have for your woodworking projects. If you are working from your basement then using power tools will probably not work out great, this therefore leaves you to use hand tools. You also need to be aware of your environment for if you live in a neighborhood then using power tools might greatly disturb your neighbors for most of these tools produce a certain noise.

Budget

In order to enjoy woodworking, then you need to be comfortable with how much you are spending. If you are operating under a tight budget on a set of woodworking plans, then it is in your best interest to start with hand tools for they are less costly and will help you do most of the woodworking projects.

Finally, please keep in mind that facing a challenge at one point in your project does not necessarily mean that you need new tools, you will be happy to note that most of the woodworking challenges just require you to think a little bit harder and consult the experts.

Preparing Your Own Gesso for Oil Painting

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Any artist whether they are working in pet portraits or house portraits will always like to find a way of cutting the cost of materials. High quality artists materials can be expensive and if there is a way the artist can save money by making their own, all the better. Anyone using oil colour usually will work on a stretched canvas. You can make up your own canvases by purchasing the fabric by the roll and making up your own gesso primer.

The main elements in gesso is rabbit skin glue and whitening. Whitening is essentially powered chalk, this adds the body to gesso but the addition of a white pigment will brighten the colour and avoid it deteriorating over time.

Rabbit skin glue comes in a dry form, usually in small lumps. These lumps will need to be softened and dissolved in water before use. The correct ratio of glue to water is 1:15 by volume. Start by softening the lumps of glue in water. To do this, depending on the size of the lumps, allow the glue to sit in the water for anything from one to six hours.

They will be ready for the next stage when they have absorbed enough water to become swollen and soft. Then the container with the glue and water can be placed into a larger pan of hot water to melt the softened lumps. Stir the mixture from time to time to help the process. When the lumps of glue have completely dissolved in the water you end up with your glue ‘size’.

Once you have the size ready you’ll need to mix this in with the whitening and pigment (if your using this). The ratio of whitening to pigment is about 50:50. Add the size gradually to the powder gradually and while the size is still warm. You may find that the mixture congeals at first, but as you add more size this should become smooth. The ideal is the consistency you are looking for is that of cream.

What is "tagging" in Relation to These Free Bike Games on the Web?

Monday, October 18th, 2010

You don’t really need to be a hardcore gamer in order to appreciate what you’ve got here. What we have here is a wholly engaging game, and a situation where in you can play, for the most, for free, and the thing is, is that you can go on, for quite some time. What’s common amongst gamers that are in this genre, is that they’ll achieve the high scores on all the newer games that come out. They’re calling this “tagging.” And they’ll post up their gamer group’s “gang sign” or calling card name or whatever, and that game will be considered “tagged.” This is common with the Bike Games that we’re seeing a lot of, as well as other games as well. You’ll see this more and more as many of these publishers transition and test game ideas out in the free and open market, which is largely ad supported in some way.

Craftsmanship of Hummel Figurines

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

The Hummel figurine is one of the most collectible figurines in the market today. This is not just because of its “endearing” designs which touch so many people but also for craftsmanship its makers devotes to it. We might have not realized that a single figurine went through a meticulous process, in accordance with the age-old Goebel tradition before we have even a glimpse of it.

Touch of Expertise

The process of art will start when a master carefully chooses a painting or a drawing by Sister Hummel. We can see here that, each piece is still from vision of Sister Hummel. Since the painting and drawing are two dimensional, it is up to the artist to execute a consistent clay sculptor according to the Sister’s drawings. A single figurine will take many weeks to sculpt before it is presented to the Artistic Board at the Convent Siessen for approval.

Molds

The next process is mold making. The sculptor may cut as many as 40 pieces to have a breeze on production.

Cast and Assemble

A liquid ceramic will be poured into the plaster working molds. The plaster will absorb the moisture of the ceramic until it thickens. It will then create a hollow shell of figurine. The excess ceramic is poured out, and the moist shell is removed for assembly into a completed figurine. The seams will be smoothed and will dry in about 1 week.

Firing

Each piece is put into an extreme temperature for at least three times during the process. Then it is cooled gradually. The first firing will make the figurine into a white bisque state. The sculptor then sprays it with glaze. The second firing will make it glossy white because of the melted glaze. Then it will be painted and put into the fire for the last time to make the paint bond permanently.

Brushing

The hues and colors used for brushing the Hummel figurines are still based on Sister Hummel’s paintings and drawings. The master painter will then present his finished sample to the Artistic Board at the Convent Siessen. Once it is approved, it will be under a lot of quality checks until it is out in the market.
